The construction industry produces between 70 to 90 million tonnes of waste each year. Reports show that up to 13% of materials that arrive on site can end up in the skip without being used. This can result in up to 30% of a skip being filled with unused or reclaimable materials.

The UK is the 3rd largest importer of unsustainable timber on the planet. A sizeable percentage of this timber is used by the construction industry.

The volume of dredged material required over the next 10 - 20 years is estimated to be between 100 to 1000 m3 for countries around the north sea. The implication being that existing dredging areas will need to be expanded and new sites found. Aggregate extraction removes the sea bed habitat and destroys the associated biota. Dredging that is carried out within 15 miles of mean low water could have an effect on coastal errosion. There are vast areas at present used for dredging off the east coast of England.

National clay production currently stands at about 8 million tonnes per annum. The clay that is used to produce bricks come from pits that are a blight on the countryside in areas such as Staffordshire and Nottingham. Large amounts of energy are then used to fire the clay into bricks.

In 2004 the UK used 3.9 million tones of gypsum, with only 0.8 million tones of this imported. Two thirds of this went to the construction industry for the production of plaster, plasterboard and cement. Gypsum production has an impact on the enviroment from mining, manufacture and transporting these materials around the country.
